In 2020, the Japanese crane market grew X% to X dollars, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. During the period under review, total consumption increased significantly from 2007 to 2020: its value declined at an average annual rate of -X% over the past 13 years. However, the trend pattern indicated that some significant fluctuations were recorded throughout the analysis period. According to 2020 data, consumption increased by +X% compared to the 2014 index. The fastest growth in 2012 was X% over the previous year. During the period under review, the market hit an all-time high in 2020 and will likely continue to grow in the near future.

In value terms, 2020 crane production is estimated to have increased marginally to $X at export prices. Gross output grew at an average annual rate of +X% from 2007-2020; however, the trend pattern suggests that some notable fluctuations were recorded throughout the analysis period. The growth rate was most pronounced in 2008, with an X% increase over the previous year. Crane production peaked at $X in 2009; however, production has remained low from 2010 to 2020.

Japan's crane export scale

In 2020, overseas shipments of cranes, mobile cranes fell -X% to X units, the sixth consecutive year of decline after two years of growth. Overall, exports fell sharply. 2011 saw the fastest growth, with exports increasing by X% year-on-year. Exports peaked at X units in 2008; however, from 2009 to 2020, export figures were slightly lower.

In value terms, crane exports fell significantly to X dollars in 2020. Exports contracted significantly during the review period. In 2008, the growth rate was the fastest, with an increase of X% year-on-year. As a result, exports peaked at X dollars. From 2009 to 2020, export growth remained low.

The United States (X units), Turkey (X units) and Vietnam (X units) are the main destinations for Japanese crane exports, together accounting for X% of total exports. The Philippines, Russia, South Korea, China, Malaysia, the UK, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan (China) and Kenya are a little behind, with a further X increase from 2007 to 2020, with the largest increase being Kenya (+X% per year), while Shipments from other leaders showed a mixed trend.

In terms of value, the United States ($X) remains the main foreign market for Japanese crane exports, accounting for X% of total exports. In second place is the Philippines ($X) with X% of total exports. It is followed by South Korea with an X% share.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of value to the U.S. was relatively modest. Exports to other major destinations recorded the following average annual export growth rates: Philippines (+X% per annum) and South Korea (-X% per annum).

Import scale of Japanese cranes

In 2020, Japan's crane imports decreased to X units, down -X% year-on-year. Overall, however, imports have grown resiliently. The fastest growth rate in 2019, with a year-on-year increase of X%. As a result, imports peaked at X units and then declined the following year.

In terms of value, crane imports dropped significantly to $X in 2020. However, imports continued to show resilient growth during the period under review. 2019 saw the fastest growth, with imports up X% year-on-year. As a result, imports peak at X dollars and then decrease significantly the following year.

In 2020, Germany (X units) was the largest crane supplier to Japan, accounting for X% of total imports. In addition, the number of cranes imported from Germany was more than double the number recorded by the second largest supplier, China (X units). Poland (X units) ranked third with X% of total imports.

From 2007 to 2020, the average annual growth rate of sales in Germany totaled +X%. The average annual growth rates of imports from the remaining suppliers are as follows: China (+X% per annum) and Poland (+X% per annum).

Statistics of various crane suppliers in Japan

Germany is Japan's largest crane supplier by value, accounting for 64% of total imports. In second place is China, which accounts for 13% of total imports. It is followed by Poland with a share of 5.8%.

In terms of value, the United States remains the main foreign market for Japanese crane exports, accounting for 34% of total exports. In second place was the Philippines, which accounted for 7.6% of total exports. It is followed by South Korea with a share of 6.6%.

The average export price for cranes in 2020 was $14,079 per unit, unchanged from the previous year.

The average import price of cranes in 2020 was $4,299 per unit, down -11.3% from the previous year.
